The first edition of this title was published by UWP in 1995 under the name “Newspaper Spanish”. The aim of this book is to provide an up-to-date guide to current mainland Spanish vocabulary as it is found in the contemporary press and media. The range of examples are drawn from newspapers, internet, journals and television. In addition, words relating to semi-specialised areas such as the legal sphere, banking and finance, administration, commerce and politics are also included.

The book is not intended to fulfil the role of a dictionary, rather it is intended to be an easily accessible companion reflecting current Spanish usage. Short examples are given for each word or phrase in meaningful context with English-translations of head-words. Basque, Catalan and Galician terms are also included since they have become a daily presence in Spanish Media written in Spanish. This new edition, by the original authors, will reflect the impact of changing socio-political and cultural realities in Spain since the first edition was published ten years ago.
