Poetry in a Provisional State: The Austrian Lyric 1945-1955Poetry in a Provisional State: The Austrian Lyric 1945-1955 (ISBN 0-7083-2080-5)
This book comprises of a detailed and original study of the wealth of poetry produced in Austria between the demise of the Third Reich and Austria's re-attainment of sovereignty in 1955.
It offers a distinctive contribution to the topic of literature and war, showing how, in the case of Austria, rejection of war-guilt after WWII produced a marked reluctance to treat the theme of war in literature. The author also demonstrates the theoretical problems for modern poetry in the handling of historical events.

The Entrepreneurial Society of the Rhondda Valleys, 1840-1920 (ISBN 9780708322901)
This is the first book to examine in a systematic way the entrepreneurial society of the Welsh Valleys. Until now, almost everything written about the society created by the Welsh coal industry has been about the workers and the unions, and there has been a significant gap, which needed to be filled if a rounded picture of life in the south Wales valleys during the coal boom was to be achieved.

Degrees of Influence: A Memorial Volume for Glanmor Williams (ISBN 9780708321171)
Few Welsh scholars in the modern era have served their profession, university and country as admirably as Sir Glanmor Williams, who died, aged 84, on 24 February 2005. By dint of intellectual brilliance, far-sighted vision and exceptional personal charm, he achieved great eminence in the field of Welsh historical studies. It is no exaggeration to claim that the flourishing condition of Welsh history during the last half century is in large measure attributable to his influence. It is appropriate, therefore, that a memorial volume should be published to honour his name and achievements.

Austria 1945-1955 (ISBN 0-7083-1339-6 )

Edited by Anthony Bushell
pp ix133 1996 hardback
The year 1995 marks two decisive anniversaries in the history of modern Austria: 50 years since the ending of the German occupation and 40 years since the signing of the State Treaty and the ending of the Allied occupation. This book will focus on the first ten years of post-war Austria at a time when this period is under critical and popular scrutiny.
'This is a valuable contribution to our knowledge of the critical first ten years of Austria's postwar history . . . readable, well documented and informative . . .There is much food for thought; some of it may even cause indigestion in Austria if, as one hopes, the book finds a wide readership there.' Capitalism, Community and Conflict: (hardback) (ISBN 0708314937)
The development of the coal industry in south Wales gave birth to a new society. Characterized by rapid population growth, urbanization of the mining valleys, friction between capitalists and workers and the development of a distinctive popular culture, this society reached its zenith in the early decades of the twentieth century. The 1920s and 1930s brought soaring unemployment, economic hardship and a determination to challenge fascism at home and abroad, while the 1940s afforded opportunities for collectivist planning which led to the public ownership of the coal industry in 1947. Chris Williams's penetrating and accessible study reassesses the turbulent, dramatic and celebrated history of the south Wales coalfield from the foundation of the South Wales Miners' Federation in 1898 to the nationalization of the coal industry in 1947.

Nationalism and Democracy in Modern Europe
Edited by Robert Stradling, Scott Newton and David Bates
pp viii228 Demy 8vo 1997 hardback
This volume examines one of the central political questions of the modern world, the uneasy and often violent relationship between the forces of nationalism and democracy. The focus is on the nation-states of western Europe during the period 1850-1970. Much of the content explores varieties of conflict and compromise between these two 'cultures', which had in many aspects a contradictory dynamic, but which nevertheless shared some basic aspirations, and often contrived to coexist, both on the national and international level.

Craft of the Blacksmith:  (ISBN 0-7083-1108-3 )
The Llawr-y-Glyn Smithy
John Williams-Davies
pp 38 1991 paperback
For centuries the blacksmith has been regarded as the most important sman in the rural community. It was he who made and serviced the vast range of iron implements, tools and utensils used on the farm, in the workshop and in the home. In the days before the tractor, when farmers relied upon the horse, the blacksmith also spent much of his time engaged in shoeing and other farriery tasks. As an introduction to the work of the rural blacksmith, this book looks at the basic techniques of ironworking and the range of skills involved. Records from Llawr-y-Glyn, a typical Montgomeryshire smithy during its heyday in the 1860s, provide a vivid picture of the sman at work in the community. Contents: The Building - its history and layout; The Rural Blacksmith - history, development, tools and techniques; Llawr-y-glyn Smithy in the 1860s. Aimed primarily at visitors to the museum it will also be of use to school children working on projects relating to the subject, and adults interested in history.

Crime in Nineteenth-Century Wales  (ISBN 0708311423)
At the present time, society and politicians are pre-occupied with the problem of rising crime rates. This book examines the emergence of this problem and the reasons why it established such a prominent place in our consciousness. In the first half of the nineteenth century the amount of criminal activity seemed to increase dramatically, to be followed by a period of exceptional calm and confidence. The author describes the levels of murder, rape, assault, burglary, theft and the breaches of other laws regulating the conduct of rural, urban and industrial populations. This study, the first of its kind, establishes that Wales was different from the rest of the United Kingdom in its criminals, and its treatment of them. It gives us a unique perspective from which to view the moral panics of the 1990s.

David Lloyd George: Movie MysteryDavid Lloyd George: Movie Mystery (ISBN 070831371X)
This is the incredible story of a silent film, made in 1918, but not screened in public until 1996. The central figure in this drama - on and off screen - is the charismatic prime minister, David Lloyd George. Completed in the last months of the First World War, The Life Story of David Lloyd George was suddenly and mysteriously withdrawn before its first trade screening; solicitors, presumably acting for the government or for the Liberal party, paid £20,000 to remove the film from the offices of Ideal, the film's production company. It was long thought that both copies had been lost or destroyed, and then in 1994 the complete negative was found amongst material supplied by Viscount Tenby (Lloyd George's grandson) for examination by the Wales Film and Television Archive.

Democratic Rhondda: Politics and Society 1885-1951  (ISBN 0708313345)
Rhondda returned Wales's first `Labour' MP, nurtured doctrines of workers' control of industry, and became a Labour Party stronghold before the Great War. In the inter-war decades Rhondda's political culture sustained not only a resilient Labour Party but also provided for a level of Communist Party support unparalleled in British terms, leading to fierce political conflict between the two left-wing parties. Democratic Rhondda provides an original explanation of Labour's rise to power and subsequent domination in this most famous of all South Wales valleys. Democratic Rhondda is an investigation of the modern political history of the Rhondda Valleys from the late nineteenth century through to the aftermath of the Second World War. This was an area of remarkable economic and demographic growth which also experienced stagnation, slump and depression, and which exhibited volatile industrial relations and vivid political histories.

The Desert and the Dream: A Study of Welsh Colonization in Chubut, 1865-1915The Desert and the Dream: A Study of Welsh Colonization in Chubut, 1865-1915 (ISBN 0-7083-0579-2)
"Print on demand"
`The quantity of research contained in this book is little short of remarkable . . . Dr Williams brings out very well the dilemma facing the colony from the very beginning. Cultural homogeneity could only be maintained by economic isolation; yet such isolation would jeopardize the very existence of the colony, at least in the lower Chubut valley, if not to quite the same extent in the settlement in the Andes at Cwm Hyfryd . . . This is a fascinating work . . . It is also a very handsome book, well produced with some evocative photographs . . . ' (Welsh History Review)

Drink and Sobriety in Victorian Wales c.1820- c.1895 Drink and Sobriety in Victorian Wales c.1820- c.1895  (ISBN 0-7083-0845-7 )
William Rhys Lambert
pp xiv294 1984 hardback
This is the first major study of the temperance movement in nineteenth-century Wales. It is a wide-ranging work which necessarily embraces numerous aspects of social, political, economic and cultural history. The role of drink and drinking in Wales on the eve of the `temperance reformation' is examined and the author then traces the development of the temperance movement from its suasionist phase to the attempt, under a distinctly nationalistic impulse, to secure parliamentary legislation on the drink issue. Throughout the study run the themes of the influence of nonconformity, political and cultural nationalism, reformist pressure group politics, and the history of recreation. The author concludes that the preliminary success and eventual failure of the temperance movement were closely related to nonconformist ethics and attitudes which were at the very heart of the movement in Wales.
`It is extremely well written...a splendid achievement and a fine contribution to the social history of Wales.' (Book news from Wales)

Glamorgan SheriffsGlamorgan Sheriffs (ISBN 0-7083-1264-0 )
Edited by Patricia Moore
pp xi116 1995 hardback
The office of sheriff originated in Anglo-Saxon England, where the sheriff was an officer of the Crown with responsibility for keeping the peace. By the beginning of the twelfth century the Normans had introduced the office into Glamorgan, and the sheriff remained an officer of the Marcher lord until the creation of the county of Glamorgan under Henry VIII. The office of sheriff is still in existence, though its duties have greatly changed, and those chosen to serve are no longer drawn exclusively from the landowning families which dominated local affairs in the past.
