Wales and its Boxers: The Fighting Tradition (ISBN 978-0-7083-1915-4)
For centuries there had been fistfighters, and from the early days of industry it was apparent that the Welsh had a particular passion for boxing. In this book the authors trace that passion through the lives of great, brave and elegant champions, by recalling their great bouts and by showing how moments of triumph were celebrated by whole communities. Every village had its heroes, and the hope was always that their names (with that of Wales) would gain the world's attention.

Your Children Will be Next: Bombing and Propaganda in the Spanish Civil War, pb (ISBN 9780708320945)
In the last week of October 1936, Franco's forces were advancing on Madrid. The fall of the capital was widely expected and with it an early end to the Spanish Civil War. Getafe, a small town to the south of Madrid, was the next target of the Nationalist assault. Sections of the international press reported that forty or more children had been killed in Getafe during an enemy air-raid. The tragedy was quickly encapsulated in a poster issued by the Ministry of Propaganda. Accompanied by the words "If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next", the poster linked Hitler's bombers with Franco's ruthless determination to overcome resistance and destroy the Republic.

Out of stock. "Print on demand".
`The riots have perhaps owed much of their fame in Wales to their nocturnal and dramatic setting, and much has been written both tendentiously and inaccurately about them. It is safe to say that Professor Williams's excellently written and dispassionate account of the movement and its background is likely to remain the final word on the subject.' meticulous research.' (Journal of Modern History)

The Rural Revolt That Failed: Farm Workers' Trade Unions in Wales, 1889 - 1950 (ISBN 0-7083-1024-9)
Like their counterparts in the south Wales coalfield and slate quarries of Gwynedd, the farm workers were also ready to stand up for their rights when the occasion demanded. They too have a history of labour disputes and strikes. History books have concentrated on the more familiar topics, particularly the Rebecca Riots and the Tithe War. Until now little attention has been paid to the grievances and struggles of the agricultural working class. This book traces the roots of their discontent, and for the first time concentrates on the efforts made by local labour leaders to organize the men into farm workers' unions. This scholarly and serious study, based on meticulous and scrupulous research will make an enormous impact on the study of Welsh social history. It rejects utterly the conventional view and offers a radically new interpretation of Welsh rural life.
`...as an anthem to the neglected pioneers of the rural labour movement his book deserves a warm welcome.' (Times Higher Education Supplement)
`...this is a book which should alter prevailing perceptions of the pattern of rural discontent and trade unionism over the last hundred years.' (Albion)

Between 1790 and 1914 Cardiff was transformed from a modest borough town into one of the greatest coal-exporting ports of the world. David Jenkins's fascinating, detailed and lavishly illustrated book is a study, based on original research, of the Cardiff and Bristol Incorporated Shipowners' Association. Valleys of Song: Music and Society in Wales 1840-1914 (ISBN 0708314805)
'Gareth Williams has written a most entertaining book, erudite but with an eye for telling detail that puts choral singing into a vivid social context.' (Western Mail)
The image of Wales as 'the land of song' is very much a Victorian creation based on the immense popularity and international renown of its choral singing, particularly in the industrial communities of the south. From the mid-nineteenth century to the First World War, the valleys of south Wales were the centre of a vibrant musical culture which embraced not just choirs but orchestras, bands and opera.

A Wandering Scholar: The Life and Opinions of Robert Roberts (ISBN 0-7083-1133-4)
Robert Roberts's autobiography, written in the Australian bush during the years around 1870, is a poignant personal account of the struggle of a poor Welsh farm-boy to achieve education and indentity. Yet Roberts's life is far from the conventional Victorian success story. Although he qualified as a school-teacher and was later ordained into the ministry, he failed in the world's eyes in both callings. At the age of twenty-nine, persistent self-doubt and the disgrace caused by his weakness for drink led him to sail to self-imposed exile in Australia. There he settled to tutoring, writing and research in Welsh lexicography. The period covered the in autobiography - from Roberts's childhood to his emigration - was a time of upheaval in rural Wales: under the impact of modernization and Anglicization, ancient patterns of farming, culture and traditions were being eroded; new forces were at work in religion and education.
