Dafydd ap Gwilym wrote of love, nature, nobility, anguish and survival, in lyrics of vivid detail, passion and wit. Regarded as one of the great European poets of the Middle Ages, he has attracted widespread study, especially since the publication of Sir Thomas Parry’s collected edition of his work, Gwaith Dafydd ap Gwilym in 1952. Dr Rachel Bromwich has been engaged in the study of Dafydd ap Gwilym’s poetry over a number of years, and has published essays on various aspects of it. The chief of these essays are collected in this volume, revised and edited by the author herself.
