This fifth impression adds to the 1,800-odd pages of the main work a fourteen-page appendix of additions and emendations. The content of this appendix varies from correction of minor typographical errors which few readers would notice to the addition of a large number of new technical, jargonistic or colloquial words and phrases, such as zapper, snailmail, peacenik, proactive, laptop, jobsworth and makeover. The precision with which the corrections and additions are detailed in the appendix exemplifies yet again the excellence of the whole work. www.gwales.com
This volume represents the most comprehensive English-Welsh dictionary ever compiled. It opens up the immense resources of a language which not only carries a rich cultural heritage but is changing and adapting to meet increasing use in public administration, the media, education and commercial life. This dictionary is indispensable for learners and first-language speakers of Welsh alike and should find a place in homes, schools and offices throughout Wales and also in libraries and universities world-wide.
'It is awesome in extent, scholarship, editorial competence - and potential usefulness . . . The typography and layout are excellent . . . Libraries worldwide, schools and colleges, official institutions, and all with an interest in Welsh life, language and culture need this outstanding, impressive dictionary. (Reference Reviews)
'This is an ambitious, thorough-going and markedly successful work . . . splendidly copious . . . The amazing richness and variety of the vocabulary and idioms of Welsh, not least in locally coloured dialects, are exploited throughout. The comprehensive nature of the dictionary is truly surprising . . . Most importantly the dictionary is particularly strong in its detailed coverage of idioms, similes, proverbs, oaths and the like for both English and Welsh.' (Times Higher Education Supplement)
