Which letters appear in the Welsh alphabet but not in the English alphabet? Make a list of them and then, if possible, find and write out a word beginning with each of those letters.

 Task 2

Looking at the first letter only, place the following words in alphabetical order. Remind yourself by looking at the alphabet strips on the edge of the pages, and remember that some letters in Welsh are double letters.

 Task 4

 (a) Look at the picture on the page for the letter ‘Ng’. Using the dictionary, find the Welsh words for five things you can see in the picture and write them out.

 (b) Look at some of the other pictures in the dictionary and see how many Welsh words you can find for things you can see in the pictures. Make a list of them.

 Task 5

You want to talk about your favourite hobbies and sports. Using the dictionary, find as many Welsh words for hobbies and sports as you can and write them out as a list.

Now, write a short letter in Welsh to a friend, talking about your hobbies, and asking about your friend’s hobbies. Your teacher will help you with setting out the letter.

 Task 6

Read the following passage about Gareth. (Version A uses ‘gyda’r dosbarth’, and version B uses ‘efo’r dosbarth’.) Look up the underlined words in the dictionary, and write down the English meanings.

 (A)

Gareth ydw i. Ym mis Mehefin, es i i Wersyll yr Urdd, Llangrannog gyda’r dosbarth. Mae Llangrannog ar lan y môr. Mae llawer o bethau i’w gwneud yn y gwersyll. Dwi’n mwynhau nofio, sgio a merlota. Dw i ddim yn gallu sglefrolio achos mae’n anodd, ond dwi’n dwlu ar ddawnsio yn y disgo achos mae’n llawer o hwyl. Mae’r bwyd yn y gwersyll yn flasus iawn. Ces i amser bendigedig yn Llangrannog.

 (B)

Gareth ydw i. Ym mis Mehefin, es i i Wersyll yr Urdd, Llangrannog efo’r dosbarth. Mae Llangrannog ar lan y môr. Mae llawer o bethau i’w gwneud yn y gwersyll. Dwi’n mwynhau nofio, sgio a merlota. Dw i ddim yn gallu sglefrolio achos mae’n anodd, ond dwi’n dwlu ar ddawnsio yn y disgo achos mae’n llawer o hwyl. Mae’r bwyd yn y gwersyll yn flasus iawn. Ces i amser bendigedig yn Llangrannog.

Now that you have the English meanings of the words, do you understand the passage?

 Task 7

Read the following letter from Rhian. (Version A uses ‘mae ... ’da fi’, and version B uses ‘mae ... gen i’.) Look up the underlined words in the dictionary, and write down the English meanings.

 (A)            Annwyl Catrin,

Helo! Fy enw i ydy Rhian. Dwi’n ddeg oed ac mae dau frawd ’da fi. Mae ci a mochyn gini ’da fi hefyd.

Mae gwallt golau, hir, syth ’da fi a llygaid gwyrdd.

Dwi’n mynd i barti pen-blwydd ar ôl cinio heddiw yn y ganolfan hamdden. Dwi’n gwisgo jîns a blows liwgar.

Y bore ‘ma, es i i’r llyfrgell. Ces i lyfr allan am bobl enwog.

                                                Hwyl fawr,

                                                            Rhian
